How to Add a New Chart in MT4

Charts

Charts display how a security's price changes over time. They are used for market analysis, running automated trading strategies (Expert Advisors), and strategy testing. You can open up to 99 charts at the same time.

Opening a Chart

You can open a new chart in several ways:

  • Go to File → New Chart.

  • Go to Window → New Window.

  • Click the New Chart button on the toolbar.

  • From the Market Watch window:

    • Right-click a symbol and select Chart Window, or

    • Hold Ctrl and drag the symbol into the workspace to open a new chart.

New charts automatically use the default chart template, which can be customized but not deleted.

Historical Data

When you open a chart, the platform loads available historical data from your computer and downloads any recent missing data from the trading server. If no history is available, the latest data is downloaded automatically.

As new market prices arrive, the chart updates in real time, and the data is saved for future use.

You can control how much historical data is stored and displayed using the Max. bars in history and Max. bars in chart settings.

Offline Charts

Offline charts use historical data stored on your computer and are not updated with live market prices. They are useful for viewing custom symbols, non-standard timeframes, or other specialized data.

To open an offline chart:

  1. Go to File → Open Offline.

  2. Select the desired chart.

  3. Click Open.

Offline charts are automatically opened using the OFFLINE.TPL template and are labeled (offline) in the chart title.

During Expert Advisor testing, the platform also creates special offline charts from test data, which can be opened for review.
